England's Les Gillett and Scotland's Alex Marshall will meet in the last-16 of the open singles event at the World Indoor Bowls Championships in Norfolk, after both came through first-round matches today.

Fifth seed Gillett ensured his progression with a 12-2, 8-4 win over Ireland's Scott Jess at Potters Leisure Resort's International Arena.

Later in the day, 12th seed Marshall beat the United States' Lawrence Quill 10-3, 11-3.

The last-16 encounter is due to take place on January 21.

Today's opening match saw eighth-seeded Englishman Robert Paxton defeat South African qualifier Craig Rimmington 7-5, 9-7.

It sets up a last-16 clash with compatriot Jamie Chestney, who advanced from the first round yesterday.

That encounter is also scheduled for January 21.

Competition in Norfolk is set to run to January 26.
