He will be tasked with implementing USOPC strategic direction for athlete well-being and physical and mental health.

This will involve working with stakeholders, including national governing bodies, to ensure the best care for American athletes.

Finnoff boasts more than two decades of experience in treating sports injuries and is no stranger to the Olympic Movement.

He attended the Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics as head team physician of the US Nordic combined team, and was also a venue medical officer at the Salt Lake City 2002 Paralympic Games.

Since 2014, he has been working as medical director at the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Minneapolis, serving as team physician for basketball sides Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx.

"It is truly an honour to be selected by the USOPC for this position," Finnoff said. 

"I'm looking forward to working with Team USA, USOPC leadership, national governing bodies, and our Olympic and Paralympic partners to advance the health and well-being of the athletes representing our nation."

Finnoff will begin his new role on March 2 in Colorado Springs.

"We recently updated our mission to ensure that sustained well-being for our athletes, along with competitive success, is at the forefront of everything we do and who we are," USOPC chief executive Sarah Hirshland said. 

"We are excited to welcome and entrust Jonathan with the important responsibility of evolving and leading our world-class medical strategy in support of American athletes and their pursuit of excellence, in both competition and in life."
