The rink skipped by Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs has moved to within one victory of the men's playoffs at curling's Canadian Open.

Jacobs, the Sochi 2014 champion, heads the world number one team and has been in good form so far in Yorkton.

He saw off the rink skipped by Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller 7-4 today to record a second win from as many matches at Gallagher Centre.

The Canadian will now clash with the rink skipped by American Korey Dropkin for a guaranteed playoff place, with the Grand Slam tournament operating under triple knockout rules.

This is different to curling's usual round-robin format, meaning teams still have the chance to progress to the playoffs until they have lost three times.

Jacobs is bidding for a third Grand Slam title in a row after winning the Tour Challenge Tier 1 and BOOST National crowns back-to-back.

Dropkin steered his side to two wins today - 6-5 over Scotland's Bruce Mouat and 5-4 over Canada's Matt Dunstone.

His rink were only promoted to this level in November, but have proved themselves worthy among the higher standard of competition.

"It feels really good," said Dropkin, who won bronze in mixed doubles at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

"It feels just good being on this page, on this level, and playing out there with everyone and getting a couple of wins."

Canada's Brad Gushue, who won Olympic gold at Turin 2006 and the world title in 2017, is also one match away from the playoffs after his rink beat Scotland's Ross Paterson 8-3.

He will face compatriot and double world champion Kevin Koe, who saw off Switzerland's Peter de Cruz 7-4 and Canadian John Epping 7-1.

In the women's event, Scotland's Eve Muirhead and Canada's Kerri Einarson will clash for a playoff spot.

Muirhead, the 2013 world champion, beat Switzerland's Elena Stern 6-4 and Canada's Tracy Fleury 5-3.

Einarson pipped compatriot Kelsey Rocque 6-5 and Japan's Olympic bronze medallist Satsuki Fujisawa 8-3.

Action continues in Yorkton tomorrow.
