Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei came through qualification today to set up a first-round meeting with top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Masters in Bangkok.

Goh beat England's Chloe Birch 21-16, 21-11 at Indoor Stadium Huamark.

She will face Yamaguchi tomorrow, with a place in the last-16 at stake.

Also learning who her first-round opponent will be today was second-seeded home favourite Ratchanok Intanon.

The 24-year-old, who triumphed at the inaugural edition of the BWF World Tour Super 300 event in 2016, will play fellow Thai Supanida Katethong after she defeated Nguyễn Thùy Linh 21-11, 20-22, 21-9.

Among those progressing through to the first round of the men's singles event today was Chinese Taipei's Lin Yu-hsien, who overcame Canada's Xiaodong Sheng 21-16, 11-21, 21-17 before claiming a 19-21, 21-13, 23-21 win over Russia's Sergey Sirant.

His reward is an encounter with compatriot Wang Tzu-wei, the eighth seed.

Action in Bangkok is due to run through to Sunday (January 26).
