Wells, an 18-year-old from Newark claimed Britain's first Paradressage medal, winning individual gold in today's grade IV competition, edging Dutch rider Frank Hosmar on Tiësto and Denmark's Henrik Weber Sibbesen aboard Rexton Royal.

Wells, who has amniotic band syndrome, which can cause deformities to hands and feet, pulled off an expressive, forward, fault-free test riding Pinocchio to an impressive 71.677 per cent score.

"He was a bit difficult in the warm-up today so I was really quite pleased with my test," Wells told Horse & Hound.

"He can just hold himself a little bit when he gets worried and he came against me to start with in the canterwork but settled again quickly so that was great.”

 

Wells is now tipped to doube her medal haul in the freestyle on Sunday (October 10).

"He can have a day off before then which is ideal as he'll be fresh," said Wells.

Brenner, who uses a wheelchair when she is not riding, and her horse, Women of the World, scored a 72.4 to win gold in the Grade III competition.

The silver medal went to Danish rider Annika Lykke Dalskov aboard Preussen Wind and Australian Sharon Jarvis and Applewood Odorado taking the bronze.

Once the rest of the individual competition in Grades Ia and Ib and Grade II is over tomorrow, team scores will be tallied to determine the winners.

Britain are favourites to win the team gold.

Paradressage has been part of the Paralympics but was added to the World Equestrian Games for the first time this year.
