World number one Fan Zhendong progressed into the round of 16 at the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Platinum event in n Magdeburg,

The Chinese star took on Shunsuke Togami of Japan at GETEC Arena, triumphing 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7. 

Fan may have a tougher test in the next round after setting up a clash with German veteran Timo Boll, who held off a last-ditch comeback from Quadri Aruna of Nigeria to win 11-5, 11-2, 11-9, 3-11, 8-11, 11-8. 

Boll, a seven-time European champion, is currently 10th in the world ranking. 

World number five Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan then suffered a shock defeat to Chuang Chih-yuan of Chinese Taipei, losing 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5. 

In the women's contest, China's world number one Chen Meng battled against Suh Hyo-won of South Korea to record a 12-14, 11-5, 10-12, 7-11, 11-7, 15-13, 11-4 victory.

Her next opponent is set to be compatriot Qian Tianyi, who eased past Jinnipa Sawettabut of Thailand 11-2, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7. 

Competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow with the round of 16 in the men and women's events. 

The quarter-finals in the men, women and mixed doubles are also due to take place.
