Austria’s Dominic Thiem came from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev and book his place in a maiden Australian Open final.

The fifth seed aimed to back-up his upset win over world number one Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Zverev enjoyed the stronger start to the semi-final, with the German seizing on a break point opportunity after a Thiem double fault.

The 22-year-old held his own serve to take the set 6-3 and take the first step towards a final against defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Thiem saw an early break of Zverev’s serve cancelled out immediately by the German in the second, but the fifth seed edged ahead again after converting the one of three break points late on in the set.

The Austrian star then held his nerve at a crucial stage of the match, saving two set points to force a third-set tiebreak.

It provided a boost to Thiem, with the 26-year-old taking charge of the tiebreak to take the set.

The fourth set was also decided on a tie-break, with Thiem again triumphing to secure a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Thiem will head into his third Grand Slam final seeking his first triumph, following defeats to Nadal at the French Open in 2018 and 2019.

He will be the clear underdog, with Serbia’s Djokovic bidding to win the Australian Open for the eighth time in his career.

Victory would take Djokovic to 17 Grand Slam titles in his career.

The women’s singles final between Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza and American Sofia Kenin will take place tomorrow.
