PB Esports Indonesia (PB ESI), a national governing that claims to represent all esports associations in the country, has been launched in Jakarta with the country's National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Budi Gunawan as its head.

Indonesia has several esports associations, including the Indonesia Esports Association (IESPA), which was formed in 2013.

It illustrates the fragmented nature of the governance of esports around the world.

The IESPA is affiliated to the International Esports Federation, the South Korean-based organisation that claims to be the biggest governing body for esports in the world.

The Association, which became a member of the Indonesian Recreational Sports Federation in June 2014, selected and sent athletes to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila in the Philippines where esports was a full medal event.

Indonesia won two silver medals in the Arena of Valor mobile game and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

The 60-year-old Gunawan, however, claimed PB ESI would become the umbrella organisation for all esports in Indonesia.

"We have so many things to do, including building an esports training centre to international standards and an arena that is integrated as a tourism destination," said Budi during his inaugural speech at the Kempinski Hotel in Jakarta.

"We plan to embrace all [esports] associations [in the country]."

Among Gunawan's other aims is to develop an esports platform connected to a high-speed internet network, and integrated to Indonesia's new fiber-optic line project connecting rural areas.

The new governing body plans to meet soon to draft esports regulations and guidelines that, they claim, will help local players and teams compete at international level.

Other key appointments to PB ESI included Sandiaga Uno, a running mate for Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto in last year's election, who has been appointed deputy chairman of the Advisory Board.

"Esports has huge potential in this country, where there are 60 million active gamers," Sandiaga said.

"The value of esports industry has surpassed $1 billion (£770 million/€900 million) and will continue to grow."
