Discussions on the role of sport in helping to combat climate change will feature during the first Global Sports Week Paris, which begins here tomorrow.

Organisers of the two-day event say the climate emergency will dominate the agenda, with several keynote speakers set to explore the topic.

This will include Formula One executive chairman and chief executive Chase Carey, as well as the Ocean Race director Richard Brisius.

Carbon policy announcements from sport organisers are also expected at the event including from incoming All England Lawn Tennis Club chief executive Sally Bolton, ahead of this year’s Wimbledon.

The French Football Federation will make a similar announcement in partnership with the French Ministry of Sport.

French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu will hold a meeting with international counterparts on the sidelines of the summit on the issue of climate change.

Global Sports Week say the event’s own sustainability practices include no single-use plastics, zero waste and the use of 100 per cent recycled materials in the site build and overlay.

The event will also feature contributions from a group of 50 young people under the age of 25 and representing 22 countries, who are billed as representatives of a new global generation.

“We believe it is crucial to understand the interests and expectations of the emerging consumer generation if sport is to continue to grow its influence and impact in the world,” said Lucien Boyer, Global Sports Week chairman.

“On climate, we hear very clearly the young generation’s clamour for change.

“Sport itself faces tangible impacts, but it also has a great potential to contribute to solutions.

“We hope Global Sports Week can be a place to put some new ideas into action.”

The event, which is organised under the patronage of UNESCO and the high patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron, will feature 1,500 delegates and more than 100 international media.

As well as the climate emergency, organisers say sport’s role in driving gender equality and the impact of digital transformation on the industry’s core business model will be key areas discussed.

Sports technology and social business will also feature.

The summit will open tomorrow with a panel discussion on the “Future of Sport”, which will feature Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet and a special announcement from Paris 2024 and the French Development Agency.

Panel discussions on “Selling sport in the age of the citizen fan” and the “Battle for Gen Z: priorities for sport to survive” will also take place on the opening day.

The latter will feature Brisius and International Basketball Federation secretary general Andreas Zagklis.

The growing urbanisation of sport and the growing power of athletes will be discussed on the opening day.

Day two of the summit will begin with a panel examining how major events adapt in the face of the climate emergency and their challenge in meeting the expectations of a more socially conscious world.

Business leaders and the International Olympic Committee will be represented when discussing how climate change is impacting sport and the changes being made as a result.

The future of sporting venues and the impact of technological and behavioural changes to how content is consumed will also be discussed.
