In Group C of the men's event, it was Chinese Taipei who claimed a whitewash win over the hosts.

Chou Tien-chen beat Ros Leonard Pedrosa 21-12, 21-8 in singles before Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin defeated Peter Gabriel Magnaye and Alvin Morada 21-9, 21-12 at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Victory was sealed when Wang Tzu-wei overcame Lanz Ralf Zafra 21-15, 21-17 and extra gloss was added to the scoreline after Liao Min-chun and Su Ching-heng beat Philip Joper Escueta and Paul John Pantig 21-9, 18-21, 21-17 and Chen Shiau-Cheng defeated Arthur Samuel Salvado 21-7, 21-9.

Earlier in the day, Philippines' women's team was defeated emphatically by Thailand in Group Y.

Three singles wins guaranteed success for Thailand, with Busanan Ongbamrungphan beating Airah Mae Nicole Albo 21-8, 21-10, Pornpawee Chochuwong defeating Carlos Maria Bianca Ysabel  21-15, 21-12 and Chasinee Korepap overcoming Sarah Joy Barredo 21-14, 21-15.

Those victories were followed by a 21-12, 21-13 success for Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai against Alyssa Yasbel Leonardo and Thea Marie Pomar, and Korepap and Phataimas Muenwong's 21-10, 21-8 triumph at the expense of Joella Geva De Vera and Chanelle Lunod.

Today's two other matches saw Kazakhstan taste defeat.

They lost 4-1 to India in Group B of the men's event and 5-0 against South Korea in the sole match in Group X of the women's event.

Group matches are due to be played through to Thursday (February 13), with the knockout stage on Friday and Saturday (February 14 and 15) and the finals on Sunday (February 16).

Indonesia are the defending men's champions, while Japan are the current holders of the women's title.

Manila is hosting the third edition of the Badminton Asia Team Championships.
