Most of the seeded teams made it through day one of the European Men's and Women's Team Badminton Championships in Liévin in France, with Denmark’s women coming out on top of a potentially tricky match with The Netherlands winning 5-0.

Elsewhere in the women’s event, second seeds Russia had a clean 5-0 win over Belgium matched by fourth seeds Germany, winning by the same score against Slovakia.

Third seeds France won 4-1 against England with fifth seeds Bulgaria narrowly escaping an upset with a 3-2 victory over Ukraine.

Sixth seeds Turkey comfortably beat Finland 5-0 but the highest women's seeds eliminated were number seven Spain who lost 4-1 to Sweden in one of the last matches to finish on day one.

Denmark comprehensively defeated Wales in their opening match in the men’s competition, continuing their unbeaten streak in the event that stretches back to 2006, when the Championships started.

Elsewhere second seeds England defeated Estonia 4-1 with Russia’s men joining the women in a 5-0 opening day win over Austria.

Third seeds France whitewashed Hungary 5-0, with eighth seeds Spain also winning their first match by the same score.

Seventh seeds Finland were the only seeds to go down in the men's competition after losing 4-1 to Ukraine in their first match.

Fifth seeds Germany and sixth seeds The Netherlands played the later games both recording whitewash victories against Czech Republic and Slovakia.
