Denmark maintained their perfect start to the men's tournament with a comfortable victory over Latvia at the European Team Badminton Championships in Liévin in France.

The Danes, seeking an eighth consecutive title, continued their 100 per cent record since the tournament began in 2006 by defeating their Latvian opponents 5-0 at the Arena Stade Couvert.

Olympic bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen despatched Andis Berzins 21-6, 21-9 to get Denmark off to a winning start in the Group One encounter.

Jan Ø Jorgensen put Denmark 2-0 in front with a 21-7, 21-8 win over Pauls Gureckis, before Hans-Kristian Solberg beat Niks Podosinoviks 21-1, 21-14 to seal maximum points for the pre-event favourites.

Mathias Boe and Mads Conrad-Petersen took just 16 minutes to defeat Berzins and Gureckis 21-4, 21-7 in the opening men's doubles match.

Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen completed the Danish clean sweep by easing to a 21-6, 21-4 victory against Podosinoviks and Toms Preinbergs.

Elsewhere in the men's event, England beat Israel 4-1, while the Netherlands swept aside Luxembourg 5-0.

A Spanish team featuring Olympic champion Carolina Marín needed the full five rubbers to get past Norway 3-2 in Group Seven of the women's event.

Marín put the first Spanish point on the board by overcoming Emilie Hamang 21-13, 21-13, but they had to rely on their last mixed doubles pairing of Ania Setien and Lorena Usle to seal victory.

Setien and Usle beat Vilde Espeseth and Emilia Petersen Norberg 21-16, 21-15 in a tense deciding rubber to earn a narrow overall win.

In the evening matches, two seeded nations suffered defeats in the women's competition with fifth seeds Bulgaria losing 4-1 to Hungary in Group Five while seventh seeds Spain lost by the same scoreline to Scotland in Group Seven.
