The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has revealed the 13 boxers who will represent the country at next month's European qualifier for Tokyo 2020 in London.

Former women's world lightweight champion Kellie Harrington has been included in the team that will compete at the Copper Box Arena on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from March 14 to 24.

Harrington claimed a silver medal at last month’s International Boxing Tournament Strandja in Sofia.

That was her first outing since picking up a hand injury at the European Games in Minsk last June.

Joining Harrington in the team are reigning European champions Kurt Walker and Aoife O’Rourke, in the respective men's featherweight and women's middleweight categories.

Rio 2016 Olympian Brendan Irvine will fight in the men's flyweight division, while Aidan Walsh will wear the Irish men's welterweight vest and older sister Michaela the women's featherweight vest.

The other male boxers to have made the squad are light welterweight George Bates, middleweight Michael Nevin, light heavyweight Emmett Brennan, heavyweight Kiril Afanasev and super heavyweight Dean Gardiner.

Completing the women’s line-up are flyweight Ceire Smith and welterweight Christina Desmond.

Ireland’s team are due to leave for their final training camp in Italian town Assisi on Monday (February 17).

They are scheduled to return home at the end of the month before heading to London, where 77 Olympic places – 50 for men and 27 for women – will be up for grabs in the eight weight classes for men and five for women.

Boxers who do not qualify will have one final opportunity at the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, from May 13 to 24.

The qualifiers are being organised by the International Olympic Committee Boxing Taskforce after the International Boxing Association was stripped of its recognition in June.

According to Bernard Dunne, the IABA’s high-performance director, there was intense competition for places on the Irish squad for London.

"We have some really good athletes pushing each other for places, so it has been a challenge to select our squad, but we have picked the best team to compete at the first qualifier in London," he said.

"We would be looking for some good performances from our team.

"We have two opportunities to qualify, London and Paris, so we will review the squad post-London.

"Preparations have gone well so far, and we head to Italy on Monday for a sparring camp which will then lead us into the qualifier.

"They’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point, so if they perform to the best of their ability in London, then that is all we can ask of them."

A total of 286 boxers - 186 men and 100 women - will compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
