Poland's Piotr Żyła surprised the favourites, winning his first men's International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup event of the season after a tight contest at Tauplitz-Bad Mitterndorf in Austria.

The Pole has been absent from the podium this year so far with national attention turning to legend Kamil Stoch and Dawid Kubacki but would win by just 0.3 points with a total score of 418.5.

And the surprises continued as Slovenia's Timi Zajc took his fourth World Cup podium and his best result of the season, coming within metres of taking his second World Cup gold.

The overall World Cup leader and home favourite, Stefan Kraft could not get the win, but would extend his lead over his closest rivals as he rounded off the podium, winning the bronze medal.

There was only 0.1 points between him and his closest competitor, Germany's Karl Geiger who finished fourth and saw the gap open between the two in the standings.

Kubacki would lose ground on the top two, finishing fifth - but the biggest loser in the overall standings was Japan's Ryōyū Kobayashi who could only finish ninth, allowing the gap to the front three to open.

Stoch could not make it a second consecutive podium, finishing seventh; with the winner last time out in Willingen, Germany's Stephan Leyhe finishing 15th, unable to reach those lofty heights from his home event.
