Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Slovenia's Anamarija Lampič are set to defend their slender leads in the sprint as the International Ski Federation Cross-Country World Cup moves to Åre in Sweden.

The Norwegian skier has won six World Cup events this year, with five coming in sprint events, but he failed to make the podium in the last sprint event in Falun.

This was won by fellow Norwegian Pål Golberg, who also won the individual pursuit last time out in Östersund.

However, the greatest threat to triple Olympic champion Klæbo's sprint title comes from France's Lucas Chanavat, who has two sprint wins to his name and sits just 14 points off the top.

Hs is ahead of Golberg and a third Norwegian, Erik Valnes, who has made the podium in the last two sprint races.

In the overall standings, Klæbo sits behind distance specialist Alexander Bolshunov of Russia by 502 points and has an opportunity to close the gap slightly.

Lampič has a 20-point lead over Linn Svahn in the sprint rankings but the Swede will look to take advantage of a home crowd tomorrow.

Svahn has the most sprint wins in the women's competitions so far with three, but has yet to finish elsewhere on the podium while the Slovenian has two wins and two silvers.

Another Swede in with a chance of victory is Joanna Sundling, who took gold in Lampič's home nation in December.

The consistency of Russia's Natalya Nepryayeva should not be ignored, either, as she has claimed sprint podiums so far this season as well as the same number in distance races.

Svahn won last time out in the sprint with Lampič absent from the podium, with Nepryayeva and Sundling taking the minor medals.

Lampič has not won a race since January 4 and will need to change that fortune to keep her lead ahead of her closest competitors.

The World Cup stop is the third leg of the Ski Tour.
