The Brazilian Taekwondo Confederation (CBTKD) has paid tribute to young fighter Lucas Alves Leite who tragically died aged just 19.

Leite died a hero after saving a 12-year-old, a 14-year-old and an adult from drowning, Metropoles reported.

He entered the Atlantic Ocean in Vilha Velha but disappeared during his rescue and his death was later confirmed.

The youngster had a first dan black belt and was in the city to attend Brazil's Taekwondo Grand Slam competition.

His 12-year-old nephew was competing in the event.

"It is with immense regret that the Brazilian Taekwondo Confederation and its members received the news of the early death of the athlete Lucas Alves Leite," the CBTKD said.

"His sudden passing left everyone surprised and shaken, but we hope that he can be in a better place and that God will comfort the hearts of family and friends.

"We send the most sincere wishes of esteem, solidarity and consideration to family and friends."
