The two finalists in each of the eight weight categories will qualify their National Olympic Committees a place for this year's Olympic Games.

The women's under-67 kilograms, women's under-49kg, men's under-58kg and men's over-80kg events are due to be held tomorrow at the Moroccan capital's Complexe Sportif Moulay Abdellah.

On Sunday (February 23), it will be the turn of the athletes in the women's under-57kg, women's over-67kg, men's under-68kg and men's under-80kg divisions.

"I expect that the African qualifications will serve as an opportunity for the top elite African athletes to display their skills," Ahmed Fouly, President of World Taekwondo Africa, said.

"Also, I hope all invited athletes will come and enjoy the thrilling moments of competition and friendship in Rabat. 

"Rest assured that World Taekwondo Africa and the Organising Committee will do its utmost effort to ensure the success of the championships."

Among the countries set to be represented at the event are Nigeria, whose team will be led by Chinazum Nwosu.

Nwosu, who narrowly missed out on qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympics, will be returning to the city where she was crowned African Games champion in the women's under-53kg category in August of last year.

"It is normal to feel pressure but I am focused on the qualifiers and putting up the right mindset," she was reported as saying by The Nation.

"As captain of the team, I know 100 per cent that the team is ready and focused on qualifying for the Olympics."

Joining Nwosu on the Nigerian team are Benjamin Okuomose and Elizabeth Anyanacho, bronze medallists in the men's over-87kg and women's under-67kg divisions at the 2019 African Games.
