The United States, aiming for a hat-trick of victories in their home leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series, made a strong start to reach the quarter-finals in Los Angeles.

The hosts - who won the 2018 and 2019 US events in Las Vegas - won their opening two games at Dignity Health Sports Park against Samoa and Scotland before losing their last Pool C game to Australia.

The Australians were one of three teams to finish day one with three wins out of three, the others being Olympic and defending champions Fiji and current Series leaders New Zealand.

Home players Carlin Isles and Perry Baker - two of the fastest in the game - made history for the hosts as they reached the milestone of 200 Series tries.

With both players entering the day on 199 tries, it was Isles who won the race to record the double-century as he scored in the opening victory over Samoa, before Baker followed suit in their next game against Scotland.

The United States will meet South Africa in their last-eight match, while Australia meet Ireland.

Fiji dominated Pool A with victories over France, Argentina and invitational team South Korea, advancing to a quarter-final against England.

France, currently third in the Series standings, claimed the runners-up position to earn a quarter-final match against New Zealand.

The latter team dominated Pool D, but a last-minute try by Ben Harris in a 21-17 defeat to the All Blacks was enough to secure England’s passage to the quarter-finals on points difference from Spain and Wales.

Ireland, newly promoted to the Series this season, earned their quarter-final place with a 19-19 draw against a South African team that had won its previous games against Canada and Kenya.

With less than five months to go until the rugby sevens tournament is due to start at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on July 27, all teams will be seeking to build on their preparations.

The tournament concludes tomorrow.
