Three new sports have been recognised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
Fitness and bodybuilding, ju-jitsu and arm wrestling were all put forward for approval at the FISU Executive Committee meeting in Lausanne.
All three sports were accepted unanimously at the gathering in the Swiss Olympic capital.
FISU recognised sports are those identified as being of interest to the university sports movement.
Events organised in these sports may be endorsed by FISU.
Applicant sports must have a governing body recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and/or the
Global Association of International Sports Federations.
Marian Dymalski, the chairman of FISU's World University Championships International Technical Committee, used the meeting in Lausanne to update on the 29 events planned in 2020.
He also confirmed that the 2021 University World Cup - Football will be held between June 2 and 13 in Jinjiang in China.
The dates have been chosen to avoid a clash with the global football season.
A University World Cup in rugby sevens will also be held from 2022 onwards, Dymalski said.
This will have the same format as the football event, where university teams compete against each other instead of national sides.
