Croatia, Denmark and Norway will co-host the 2025 Men’s Handball World Championship, while Germany and The Netherlands will jointly stage the women’s event in the same year.

Germany and Hungary will respectively host the men’s and women’s World Championship in 2027.

The tournaments were awarded by the International Handball Federation (IHF) Council at its latest meeting in Cairo.

The 2025 Men’s World Championship will be the third time the event has been co-hosted, with Denmark and Germany having jointly staged the 2019 contest.

Egypt is due to stage the 2021 tournament, before Poland and Sweden share hosting rights in 2023.

Germany will be the sole host nation of the 2027 Men’s World Championship.

Two years earlier, Germany will co-host the 2025 Women’s World Championship with The Netherlands.

"We are very proud that we will host the 2025 IHF World Championship together with the German Handball Federation," said Tjark de Lange, President of The Netherlands Handball Federation.

"This will allow us to present handball across The Netherlands for three weeks in December 2025 which fits perfectly into our strategy."

Hungary will stage the 2027 Women’s World Championship.

The IHF Council also confirmed Croatia would step in to host the 2020 Women’s Under-18 World Championship, after China withdrew from staging the event due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Georgia was awarded the 2022 Women’s Under-18 World Championship, while bidding will be opened again for the 2024 event to ensure a wider spread of host nations.

Slovenia and North Macedonia will host the 2022 and 2024 Women’s Under-20 World Championship respectively.

Germany was awarded the 2023 Men’s Under-21 World Championship, with Poland due to host the event two years later.

The Men’s Under-19 World Championship will be held in Croatia during 2023, with the 2025 event awarded to Slovenia.

Next year’s Men’s and Women’s Under-17 Beach Handball World Championships will be held in Portugal.

The IHF said the Council also heard a report on recent European, Asian and African men’s continental championships, along with the upcoming second edition of the IHF Men’s Super Globe in Saudi Arabia.

Development focused on the new programme entitled “Reach the Next Level!”, which the IHF claims includes education of coaches in Asia and an African preparation programme for the upcoming 2021 Men’s World Championship.

“Discussions at the IHF Executive Committee meeting were productive and valuable especially our new developmental programme,” said Hassan Moustafa, IHF President.

“I was pleased to hear about our successful continental competitions and I look forward to seeing our ideas become reality through our many projects very soon.”

A joint IHF and European Handball Federation meeting regarding wheelchair handball was also held earlier this month.

The meeting was held to help prepare the joint World Wheelchair Handball Championship later this year.

A second edition is planned for 2021.
