Angus Arthur made history today by becoming the first wrestler from Jamaica to claim a Pan American Championships gold medal with victory in the men’s freestyle 92 kilograms event in Canada's capital Ottawa.

While there were only two athletes registered in the weight class, Arthur impressed in the final by beating Costa Rica’s Maxwell Lacey Garita 13-1 using high-powered offence at Shaw Centre.

The other men’s freestyle gold medal went to the United States' Jason Nolf, who went 2-0 in 79kg round-robin action.

He began the day with a 10-0 technical fall over home wrestler Guseyn Ruslanzada and won his second bout by injury default against Mexico’s Victor Hernandez Luna.

Ruslanzada was the silver medallist after defeating Hernandez Luna.

Today also saw women's freestyle competition conclude, with the US emerging victorious in three of the six weight classes.

Reigning world champion Tamyra Mensah-Stock won her second straight continental title at 68kg.

As was the case last year, she had to overcome Cuba's Yudari Sanchez Rodriguez in the final.

This time, Mensah-Stock went up 6-0 in the second period before getting the pin.

Venezuela's Maria Jose Acosta Acosta and Canada's Olivia di Bacco were the bronze medallists.

At 62kg, the US’s Mallory Velte avenged her loss from last year’s Pan American Championship finals, beating Brazil’s Laís Nunes de Oliveira 6-2.

Canada's Jessica Lise Brouillette was the bronze medallist.

The US’s Victoria Anthony won her third Pan American title with a solid performance at 50kg.

Though she won her final by injury default over Colombia's Carolina Castillo Hidalgo, Anthony was dominant in the first half of the day, winning both of her matches with 10-0 technical falls.

The bronze medals went to Brazil's Kamila Barbosa Vito da Silva and Ecuador's Jacqueline Mollocana Eleno.

Thanks to its three individual titles, the US won the team race with 152 points and were followed in the standings by Canada with 141.

Also tasting victory today were Ecuador's Luisa Valverde Melendres, Brazil's Giullia Rodrigues Penalber De Oliveira and Canada's Justina Di Stasio at 53kg, 57kg and 76kg, respectively.

Valverde Melendres won all four matches in her round-robin by either technical fall or pin, with Canada's Jade Parsons taking silver and Cuba's Lianna De La Caridad Montero Herrera securing bronze.

Rodrigues Penalber De Oliveira defeated Canada's Hannah Taylor by fall in the dying seconds of her final, while 2018 world champion Di Stasio clinched her crown with an injury default win over the US's Adeline Gray in her final.

Venezuela's Betzabeth Sarco Colmenarez was the 57kg bronze medallist, while Brazil's Aline Da Silva Ferreira, the 2014 world silver medallist, and Colombia's Andrea Olaya Gutiérrez shared the third step of the 76kg podium.

The Pan American Championships are due to conclude tomorrow.

The final eight men’s freestyle weight classes are scheduled to be contested.
