The International Swimming Federation (FINA) have put together a team in a bid to tackle the ongoing issues with coronavirus.

Three doctors and two professors are part of the taskforce which includes FINA Bureau members Margot Mountjoy, Mohamed Diop and Mario Fernandes.

They are joined by Sports Medicine Committee chairman Cees-Rein van den Hoogenband and vice chairman David Gerrard.

All of the members will analyse the spread of the virus.

Other responsibilities include forecasting the impact on FINA events, recommending protective measures, informing FINA nations on strategies to minimise the spread and coordinating with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission.

"Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, FINA has been working hard to make sure our athletes, officials and fans are protected as much as possible," said 84-year-old FINA President Julio Maglione.

"All those who love aquatics are looking forward to the competitions of Tokyo 2020.

"FINA is being proactive to secure the Olympic qualifying system for our disciplines and to ensure our athletes benefit from both sporting opportunity and health protection.

"FINA's long-standing focus on health means we can call on many widely-recognised experts in the medical field and we are very grateful for their time and their insights."

At present, FINA does not anticipate any changes to the overall Olympic qualifying systems.

More than 121,000 people have been infected by the virus, with 4,383 deaths.

China, where the outbreak originated, has missed many FINA events due to the crisis, including the Diving Grand Prix which they normally dominate.

FINA have also had to postpone an Olympic water polo qualifier in Italy, as well as one in Kazakhstan, after the former withdrew from hosting the competition.
