Britain has publicly revealed the 22 players who would have represented the country at the World Championship Division II Group A tournament in Jaca in Spain, despite the event being cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Head coach Cheryl Smith said they had decided to name the squad anyway as those selected "deserve to be recognised".

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) cancelled the women's tournament, which had been due to take place between March 29 and April 4, in response to the COVID-19 virus.

"The 22 players and two reserves bust a gut to get into the World Championship squad and they deserve to be recognised," Smith said.

"It was devastating for them to have the tournament cancelled, but we all totally understand the reasons behind it.

"Being named in any type of Britain squad is a very special honour, no matter what level you play at."

Smith added: "Putting on that GB shirt is one of the most proudest things you can do in the sport.

"These players sacrificed a lot this year - and worked so hard - so we feel it is only right they should get the recognition for it."

The competition was among the events cancelled or postponed by the IIHF, which also included the Under-18 World Championship in the United States, in light of the outbreak.

The IIHF has said the men's World Championship in Switzerland, due to be held from April 27 to May 3, has not been cancelled or postponed and the event is scheduled to go ahead as planned

This comes despite Switzerland imposing a nationwide lockdown and the Government banning events involving a certain number of people.

According to latest figures, there have been more than 7,000 deaths from the virus, while nearly 180,000 people have been infected worldwide.
