Organisers hope to rescheduled the multi-sport event for ex-armed services personnel for either May or June in 2021.

The Netherlands is one of many European countries to have asked its citizens to only leave the house for essential reasons in an effort curb the spread of COVID-19.

Medical resources in the country are already stretched as things are.

Mart de Kruif, Chairman of the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, claimed there was therefore "no other choice than to reschedule the Invictus Games to the year 2021".

"By doing this, we also bring clarity to those vulnerable competitors and their loved ones, a clarity which is so desperately needed in their journey to recovery", he added.

Invictus Games Foundation chief executive Dominic Reid echoed those thoughts.

"We know that those training to compete and represent their countries will be disappointed, but we also know that for The Hague to deliver a safe, exciting and impactful Games, the wait until next year will be worth it", Reid said.

"All competitors who were selected by their nations to take part in the Invictus Games The Hague 2020 will receive their medallion from the Invictus Games Foundation later this year in recognition of their resilience, their commitment to their training, and as an acknowledgment of their journey to recovery through sport."

The Hague is due to host the fifth edition of the Games, following London, Orlando, Toronto and Sydney.

Another European city - Düsseldorf in Germany - has already been chosen to host the sixth edition, currently set to be held in 2022.
