World Taekwondo has decided to hold its Extraordinary Council meeting by video conference call due to the coronavirus crisis.

The governing body revealed the meeting on May 12 will be held online.

It was scheduled to take place at Olympic House in Lausanne, but the physical meeting was cancelled due to global travel restrictions caused by the outbreak of coronavirus.

"The world is facing unprecedented challenges and we all have a responsibility to take measures to support the containment of this pandemic," said World Taekwondo President Choue Chung-won.

"At the same time, we must continue to operate as normally as possible and ensure we support our athletes and all those who are involved in taekwondo.

"Thanks to the digital world we live in we can hold our Extraordinary Council meeting remotely, minimising disruption and allowing our Council to discuss the most pressing issues facing our sport."

As with every sport, taekwondo has been impacted by the coronavirus crisis, with their European and Asian Olympic qualifying tournaments both postponed.

World Taekwondo recently announced a collaboration with the Wuxi Municipal People’s Government and the Jiangsu Wuxi Economic Development Zone to donate 100,000 protective masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Nearly 297,000 people have been infected with coronavirus worldwide so far, with more than 12,000 deaths.
