German cross-country skier Thomas Wick has announced his retirement at the age of 28.

Wick enjoyed success in his youth career, winning a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in 2009 and a bronze in 2010.

He entered the World Cup circuit for the first time in 2013 but has now decided to hang up his skis.

"The past few years have been an incredible journey for me," said Wick.

"A journey of hopes and dreams, of victories and defeats.

"Perhaps not all of my wishes and dreams have been fulfilled, but the most important thing is that you live them and never stop believing in what is worth striving for.

"I learned on this journey that there is not only one way.

"Finding your own way – this freedom should be taken as a young person."
