The event was due to take place in Enoshima in Japan from June 14 to 21.

World Sailing’s Board of Directors and the Japan Sailing Federation (JSAF) agreed on the cancellation following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee’s decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and to ensure the health and well-being of sailors, support personnel, officials and volunteers. 

Tokyo 2020 is now scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021 and World Sailing is currently working with the IOC on necessary adaptations to Games delivery plans and Olympic qualification systems. 

Discussions are now being held between World Sailing and the JSAF, looking at possibilities for future Olympic class sailing events to be held out of Enoshima Yacht Harbour prior to the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

World Sailing said last month it is reviewing all its events in collaboration with the organising authorities and the Olympic class associations.

The international governing body's Medical Commission is said to be in close communication with the World Health Organization and the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission in order to closely monitor the development of COVID-19.

World Sailing also recently cancelled its 2020 Extraordinary General Meeting, which had been set to take place in London on May 2.
