USA Nordic are showing junior ski jumpers compete in virtual events on their YouTube and Facebook pages during the coronavirus pandemic.

The governing body have held national virtual competitions for junior ski jumpers since 2014.

Athletes from the under-14, under-12 and under-10 levels have been sending in videos of their best jumps, which are then judged and put into a compilation video that is narrated by a pair of commentators.

This year, USA Nordic have been showing them daily on their social media channels in the absence of live sport due to the pandemic.

The winning athlete for each gender in each age range will win a pair of brand new skis.

"We kind of realised how big an event we can make this,” said Ben Berend, USA Nordic marketing manager, as reported by Steamboat Pilot.

"Usually it’s a fun thing we do to get our younger athletes something fun and cool.

"It’s a little different this year, because we realised this is one of the only sporting events going on in the world."

Competition began on Monday (April 13) and ends tomorrow.

Commentators include Jeff Hastings, who finished fourth in the ski jump at the Sarajevo 1986 Winter Olympic Games and came up with the idea of virtual nationals.

He will commentate alongside Peter Graves, who announced ski jumping, Nordic combined and cross-country events at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
