Sixty wheelchair racers took part in a virtual Boston Marathon after the event itself was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Competition was due to take place on April 20 but was moved to September 14 following the outbreak of coronavirus.

The world's top racers met online to complete the 26.2 mile course virtually instead.

Participants included men's defending champion Daniel Romanchuk and five-time winner Tatyana McFadden, both of the United States, and women's defending champion Manuela Schaer and three-time winner Marcel Hug, both of Switzerland.

Athletes from Australia, Canada, Brazil, Britain, Japan and South Africa also took part.

While competing, the racers discussed how they were coping with the suspension of sport due to the pandemic.

Many were to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games this summer, with competition now rescheduled to August 24 to September 5 2021.

"It’s a lot of different emotions,” said Romanchuk.

"But I try to keep my concentration and focus on what’s today and take it one day at a time.

"One thing I learned is that you can make a plan, but you never know if that plan is going to change.

"So you need to stay flexible."
