Australia are top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings for the first time in four years after replacing India.

In the annual update published by the ICC, which eliminates results from the 2016-2017 period, Australia lead New Zealand by one point.

India, displaced as the top Test team in the world for the first time since 2016, are a point further behind in third.

England are fourth, 11 points adrift of their Australian rivals.

Australia, who have 116 points, also head the world Twenty20 rankings, while world champions England remain the top-ranked team in the 50-over one-day international format.

"We recognise how fluid these rankings are, but at this time it was certainly nice to put a smile on our faces," said Australia coach Justin Langer.

"Hopefully over the past couple of years not only have we performed well on the field, but also off the field.

"You can only judge yourself as being the best if you beat the best.

"Ultimately, we have to beat India in India, and we've got to beat them when they come back [to Australia]."

Australia have moved top of the Twenty20 standings and occupy top spot for the first time since the rankings were introduced in 2011.

England are second and India are third, while Pakistan, who spent 27 months at the summit of the rankings, have slipped from first to fourth.

India still lead the ICC World Test Championship, a league comprising six series played by each of the top nine Test sides.
