The National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF) has postponed "DM Week" - a series of National Championships held in quick succession - until 2022 in light of sport's changing calendar.

It was due to be held in Aalborg in 2021 to coincide with the DIF's 125th anniversary.

Danish Championships in fencing, sport climbing, cycling and tennis are among those planned, but with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games now due to take place from July 23 to August 8 in 2021, DM Week has been pushed back to allow athletes to focus solely on the Olympics.

It is also hoped that DM Week will be given more attention if it takes place when the sporting calendar is not so crowded.

"With the postponement of the DM week, we show timely care," DIF chief executive Mølholm Hansen said.

"We do not believe it is time for 2021 to launch a DM Week, which we expect a lot in the long term.

"We want to get offshore properly with our new DM concept and have a lot of awareness about the competitions.

"We will not get that in 2021.

"On the other hand, we now have one more year to prepare, so everything is ready for the summer of 2022."

The Tour de France is due to begin in Copenhagen in 2021, with the first three stages all on Danish soil.

Copenhagen is also one of the cities hosting matches in men's football's European Championships, which have also been pushed back to 2021.

Denmark's three group-stage games and one last-16 tie are all set to be played at the city's Parken Stadium.

According to the DIF, more than 30 sports have shown an interest in taking part in DM Week.

DM is an acronym of Danish Championships in the Danish language.

It is hoped that an agreement can be reached to still hold the event in Aalborg in 2022.
