National Council Sports Education of Mexico (CONDDE) has expressed an interest in hosting a World University Games in the future.

CONDDE secretary general Manuel Alan Merodio Reza said hosting a World University Games was among the organisation’s principal goals in the future.

The FISU America vice-president also said Mexico achieving a top three finish on the medals table at the FISU America Games was another key target.

Mexico has hosted the World University Games before, with Mexico City staging the event in 1979.

It is one of three editions of the Summer Games to have been held in North America, with one Winter Games held on the continent to date.

Lake Placid in the United States is due to host the 2023 Winter University Games.

The World University Games have typically been held in Asia and Europe.

South America has hosted the Games on one occasion, with Porto Alegre in Brazil staging the third edition of the summer event in 1963.

A Universiade has never been staged in Africa or Oceania.

FISU Oceania President David Schmude suggested a future World University Games in Australia would give university sport in the region a major boost.

Merodio has now followed suit in suggesting a potential Games in Mexico.

The official, speaking in an interview with FISU Student Ambassador Valeria Rojas, also reflected on the country’s achievement at the Naples 2019 Summer World University Games.

"During 2019, all the events carried out by CONDDE were special, but without any doubt the most significant was the World University Games, held in Napoli," he said.

"The Mexican delegation had its best participation ever, with eight gold medals, seven silver medals and six bronze.

"The goal now, is to stay in the top ten in future World University Games."
