Maikel Scheffers_21-10-11October 22 - Sixty eight wheelchair tennis stars are coming to Nottingham next week for the Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, hoping to earn valuable world ranking points in the ongoing quest to qualify for next year's London 2012 Paralympic Games.


The event takes place between October 26 and 30, and with the qualification window open for London 2012 the competition is sure to be fierce.

Among the favourites for glory in the men's competition will be Dutch world number two Maikel Scheffers (pictured), but there is also considerable home interest with doubles champions David Phillipson and Marc McCarroll in action alongside British No 1 Gordon Reid."

In the women's competition, another Dutch competitor, Dorrie Timmermans-van Hall, will be hoping for a medal in the quad event, whilst Lucy Shuker and defending singles and doubles champion Jordanne Whiley will also have high hopes.

Tournament director Becky Tilley said: "With the coming year being such a crucial one for wheelchair tennis, it's great to see so many top international and British players back in action in Nottingham.

"I hope people take this opportunity to learn more about a really exciting sport that will no doubt be a highlight of the London 2012 Paralympic Games."

Spectators hoping to watch the action can do so for free at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre.
