A total of 237 participants took part in the previous event held on June 22 and 23.

The second section was held from September 4 to 6, as part of a revised online programme aimed to replace the usual event held in Kazan in Russia every year.

Overall, 400 participants from 116 National University Sports Federations were involved, covering all five Continental Federations.

FISU says 129 new FISU Student Ambassadors have emerged from this year's edition.

"This new online format of the event was a challenge for us," said Albina Rakhmatullina, Volunteer Leaders Academy and FISU Student Ambassadors programme coordinator.

"However, we ended up having a fantastic event.

"The end of Volunteer Leaders Academy is the beginning of the Ambassadors programme, so it is the beginning of a tall task that will be done online this year.

"The best is yet to come."

The online event was claimed to have maintained a strong educational and cultural programme.

The event was overseen by the Volunteer Leaders Academy Organising Committee, which was based at the Innopolis University in Russia.

"Our Academy always brings out the best example of diversity and global learning," said Misha Vanyushin, culture and engagement manager for the three-day event.

"Differences of culture and language are nothing, if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.

"As the MC, it was rather a new experience for me, in terms of organising online ceremonies and online cultural programmes.

"I hope the participants liked the way it was done."

The Volunteer Leaders Academy typically involves lectures, roundtable discussions and networking opportunities.

Attendees are encourage to support International Day of University Sport (IDUS) - a FISU initiative endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, annually celebrated on September 20.

FISU's Volunteer Leaders Academy exists to create a volunteering community around the world to share best practices for sports events worldwide.
