By unanimous consent, the World Lacrosse Board agreed to establish the Diversity and Opportunity Commission and the Women in Sport Commission.

The former is set to advise the Board, chief executive and members of World Lacrosse on diversity issues and opportunities.

It will bring recommendations to both the Board and General Assembly. 

A chair will be appointed by the Board and will attend all meetings.

The Women in Sport Commission is expected to promote equal opportunities in lacrosse for girls and women to participate in.

World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern is due to be chair. 

With the two commissions now approved, World Lacrosse will begin the recruitment process to seat the commissions this month. 

The process for nominations and applications will be published on the World Lacrosse website, with the materials also set to be sent directly to the leadership of national governing bodies. 

In addition, a Women’s Indoor and Box Lacrosse Working Group was established. 

Its aim is to develop a pathway for development of women’s indoor and box lacrosse around the world.

Former player Michelle Bowyer of Canada, has been appointed to chair the group. 

"For all the growth our game has experienced this past decade, we know that much more can be done - and should be done - to encourage greater diversity and opportunity for participation in lacrosse," said Redfern. 

"These two commissions and the working group are critical elements in our strategy to make certain the pathway of opportunity is as open and accessible as possible."

Newly appointed independent director Steve Govett participated in the Board meeting for the first time. 

Govett, who replaced Peter Guber, is President of the San Diego Seals professional indoor lacrosse franchise and is a former player. 

"This Board seat is one of the most prestigious honours of my career," he said. 

"World Lacrosse works to positively impact the lives of lacrosse players and their communities across the globe and has a vision to spread the game worldwide. 

"It brings me great joy to have an opportunity to contribute to the growth of lacrosse beyond its current borders."
