The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has celebrated this year's edition of World Fencing Day on social media.

World Fencing Day, held on September 12 every year, aims to unify the fencing community around the world.

Celebrations this year were held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Centering around the theme of "Fencing, a Passion, a Family", the FIE encouraged fans to post a video or photo for World Fencing Day on social media.

FIE also hosted digital fencing events and posted activities on the governing body's YouTube channel.

Among those celebrating World Fencing Day on social media were the Global Association of International Sports Federations and the Olympic Council of Asia.

"World Fencing Day 2020 brings people worldwide together to love, learn and think about fencing," the FIE said in a statement.

"We can achieve our dreams by supporting, respecting and honouring everyone in our sport.

"Our actions define our history, and we are ready to face the future together."
