Aliona Bolsova of Spain and Casper Ruud of Norway were among the names to upset the odds and beat seeded players during the first round of the Italian Open today.

Ruud caused the biggest upset on the men's side today as he beat Russian Karen Khachanov, the 11th seed, in three sets 6-3 3-6 6-1.

Another seed to tumble was Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 16th seed, who was beaten 6-4 7-5 by Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.

There was better news for Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, the 15th seed, who beat Gianluca Mager, the Italian wildcard 7-5 6-1.

Despite Mager's loss, other Italian players were able to win their round of 64 matches.

Lorenzo Sonego comfortably beat Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 6-1 while their were wins for two more home wildcards - Jannik Sinner beat France's Benoit Paire 6-2 6-1 and Stefano Travaglia beat America's Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6 in the last match of the day, which finished around quarter to midnight local time.

On the women's side, the highest-profile seeded casualty was America's Alison Riske, the 13th seed, who was beaten by Aliona Bolsova 5-7 7-6 6-3.

American youngster Amanda Anisimova also caused an upset as the 19-year-old overcame 16th seed, Croatia's Donna Vekic, in two tie-break sets 7-6 7-6.

There was better news for two more women's seeds who recorded straight sets wins as they reached the round of 32.

Elena Rybakina, the 10th seed from Kazakhstan, beat Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-0 6-4 while Elise Mertens, the 11th seed from Belgium, beat Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei 6-3 6-1.

First round action will continue in the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier tournament at the Foro Italico in Rome tomorrow.
