The Netherlands’ Marianne Vos claimed her 27th stage Giro Rosa win in her career after battling to the line in Terracina.

It was also the former Olympic champion’s second stage victory in this year’s event as she starred on day three and five.

But the CCC-Liv rider’s Dutch compatriot Annemiek van Vleuten, of Mitchelton-Scott Women, still leads the way in the general classification despite finishing in 28th position.

Vos clinched the 110-kilometre fifth stage after coming out on top in a bunch sprint to the line.

The 33-year-old, who won gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, finished in two hours, 47 min and 27 secs.

Belgian Lotte Kopecky, of Lotto Soudal Ladies, came second followed by Britain’s Elizabeth Deignan, of Trek-Segafredo Women, in third.

"I had good memories already here and I have to say it was not an easy stage with the climb and we tried to make it hard," said Vos in a report by CyclingNews.

"My teammates did a really hard pace on the climb to split the field and I am very happy to finish it off."

Van Vleuten retains the overall lead ahead of Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma, of Canyon-Sram Racing, while The Netherlands’ Anna van der Breggen, of Boels Dolmans Cycling Team, is in third position.

According to Eurosport, Van Vleuten’s Mitchelton-Scott teammate Amanda Spratt added: "It was as we expected today.

"We thought it would either be a bunch kick or a team like CCC would line it up on the climb to get rid of the pure sprinters, which we were fine with as well.

"That's what happened, they drove the whole climb and most of the sprinters got dropped - after that it was quite an aggressive race.

"For us it was about looking after Annemiek and getting into the finish nice and safely."

Tomorrow’s 97.5km stage will see riders travel from Torre del Greco to Nola and tackle a category three climb.

The race is scheduled to finish on Saturday, September 19.
