Qatar has been confirmed as the hosts of the 2021 Men's and Women's Asian Table Tennis Championships, which is scheduled to be held in September next year.

This news was announced by the Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA), with the decision being made after China and India withdrew from the bidding race.

It will be the second time the Gulf nation has held the competition, having made its hosting debut in 2000.

"We will have the honour to host the best players of the region especially the ones from East Asian countries like China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and South Korea," said Khalil bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi, President of QTTA and the Arab Table Tennis Federation.

"It will be like a mini-world championship.

"We are very happy with the honour that the State of Qatar has been chosen as the hosts for the second time.

"I thank the members of the General Assembly for choosing us after China and India quit the race."

Al Mohannadi, who is also the first vice-presidents of the Asian and International Table Tennis Federations (ITTF), confirmed that Qatar's capital Doha will also host the next General Assembly of the ITTF during the same week.

Doha has also been host to the Qatar Open table tennis event for over two decades.

"I thank the members of the General Assembly for choosing us after China and India quit the race," Al Mohannadi added.

"I am confident that our youth will come into contact with the best-ranked players in the region.

"Also, it will be another opportunity for Qatar to host yet another world-class event - we have top-notch infrastructure in Qatar."

The last Asian Table Tennis Championships took place last year in Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

China's Xu Xin won the men's singles title and Sun Yingshsa the women's.
