Iran hosted the Capital Cup event ©IRITF

Iran has hosted the Capital Cup, a virtual international tournament in poomsae taekwondo.

The event was arranged by the Tehran Taekwondo Union in the country's capital city.

Both male and female athletes took part in individual and group competitions, with 1,300 competitors from 78 countries involved in all.

The holders of black, blue, red and green belts were among those to take part.

Iran topped the overall medals table for both the men's and women's competitions.

The hosts won 10 golds, 11 silvers and 11 bronze out of 700 male athletes, placing them in front of Venezuela who won three gold medals.

Out of the 600 women to take part, Iran won nine golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronze.

Mexico were their nearest challengers with a pair of golds.

The event was the latest in poomsae taekwondo to have taken place online amid the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Judges watched the peformances on a screen before giving their marks.
