International Judo Federation (IJF) World Judo Tour competition is set to return with the Budapest Grand Slam from October 23 to 25, with the governing body confirming the event has been given the green light.

The World Judo Tour was suspended after the coronavirus pandemic hit in March, with many athletes unable to train or travel to events.

It is now planned to return at the end of this month in the Hungarian capital.

"It is an historic moment for world judo and for sport," said IJF President Marius Vizer.

"We look forward to the organisation of the Grand Slam in accordance with IJF regulations and in strict compliance with global health and safety measures.

"I would like to warmly thank everyone for the efforts made, in a difficult period for everyone.

"We must adapt for COVID-19, and what better way to demonstrate that than the return of our beloved World Judo Tour.

"We will do everything we can to ensure that athletes can express themselves and resume their sporting activity."

Judoka responded to the return of competition with joy.

"I’m always ready - today, tomorrow, next month, next year," said Italy's Fabio Basile, Rio 2016 Olympic champion in the under-66 kilograms division.

"My job is not only before competitions, but every day.

"I’m ready for Budapest and the next and the next."

The 2020 European Judo Championships have been pushed back by 11 days in November to accommodate the recent changes to the IJF calendar.

Set to be staged in Prague in the Czech Republic, the event was first slated for May 1 to 3 but was initially rescheduled to November 8 to 10 due to the ongoing threat of the pandemic.

Now, the action is scheduled to take place at O2 Arena in the Czech capital from November 19 to 21.

No World Judo Tour events have taken place since the Rabat Grand Prix, due to begin on March 6, was cancelled.

The Tokyo Grand Slam, scheduled to take place from December 11 to 13, has also been cancelled.
