The European Handball Federation (EHF) is distributing quick COVID-19 tests to clubs and National Federations, in a bid to get the sport back operating fully in a safe manner.

Work has already started in this area with test kits being supplied to clubs who have been taking part in EHF competitions until the end of October, while all national governing bodies involved in national team competitions in early November also receiving them.

In total, 10,000 tests have either been sent out or are due to be sent to clubs and federations.

These quick tests will show a result within 15 minutes, giving an indication as to whether or not COVID-19 is present, it is claimed.

Clubs who do not need a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can use the tests, while clubs who need a negative PCR test due to travelling can use the quick tests for their home matches.

PCR allow a small part of a person's DNA to be studied in finer detail, giving a better understanding as to whether someone is infected by COVID-19.

The EHF has previously released its Back to Handball Hygiene Concept to clubs and National Federations, outlining requirements in competitions to ensure the safety of players, coaches and match officials, with a number of COVID-19 recommendations.

"As the guardians of European handball, it is our duty to assist clubs and federations in their situation and ensure a controlled and safe continuation of the sport throughout the 2020-2021 season," they said.

"The distribution of these tests will also ease the financial burden on clubs and federations during these difficult times.

"It is hoped that the kits will help curb the spread of he virus and ensure that all handball players and staff are able to compete in a safe environment."

Handball looks to return to action soon, with the International Handball Federation recently permitting the increase in squad sizes for the Men's World Championship in Egypt in January to safeguard teams from losing too many players to the virus at the tournament.
