Waterside Theatre_AylesburyJanuary 10 - Great Britain men's and women's wheelchair basketball team's will discover their opponents for the opening matches of London 2012 next week with the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) set to make the draw at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury on January 21.


All 12 men's teams and 10 women's teams have now qualified from their world zones with powerhouses such as the United States, Canada and Australia having safely made it into the pot for the draw.

The draw is vitally important for Britain as a home nation as they get to choose which pool they would like to be placed which will undoubtedly help their chances of winning a Paralympic medal.

"We see the draw as one of the most important milestones in the run up to London 2012 as both team look to plan the their best pathway to the knock out stages," said British Wheelchair Basketball chairman Malcolm Tarkenter.

The men's teams that have qualified for the Paralympic are Australia, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, South Africa, Turkey and the USA.

The women's teams to have qualified for the Paralympic are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, the USA.

The last spot in the women's event is still to be determined but it will either go to Mexico or South Africa depending on who wins their vital qualifying match.

The evening draw in Aylesbury is one of celebration and will provide the opportunity for the public to meet Britain's men's European Championship winning team and Britain's women's BT Paralympic World Cup champions whilst enjoying some insights from players as they prepare for London 2012.

During the day, there will be plenty of action to be seen as four of the best wheelchair basketball teams in the UK will take to the court to play Super League matches at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympics.

The teams will include a number of players from Britain's men's squad such as Simon Munn, Ade Orogbemi (pictured), Abdi Jama and Peter Finbow.

London based club, Capital City will take on Sheffield Steelers in the first match at 11.30am, followed by current Super League Champions, RGK Rhinos, facing Tameside Owls at 14.30pm.

All matches are free to spectators.
