That is the total number since the pandemic began.

A Tokyo 2020 statement said that "a male employee in his 20s employed at a Tokyo 2020 office in Harumi in Tokyo’s Chuo ward tested positive for COVID-19".

The individual has been working remotely since October 13, the Organising Committee added.

"Tokyo 2020 will continue to work with relevant organisations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and take all necessary measures to maintain a safe and secure working environment for our staff", finished the statement.

The last confirmed coronavirus case among Organising Committee staff was announced on October 6, and before that the fourth was on September 5.

Japan reported 570 new coronavirus cases yesterday.

The nation has not reported a daily increase of more than 1,000 since August 23.

The global health crisis lead to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics being postponed until 2021 back in March.

Japan saw a spike in infections after that announcement and then again in July and August, but daily case numbers have been relatively steady for the last month.

As a result, stadiums hosting sporting events are allowed to admit spectators up to 50 per cent capacity.

Stringent restrictions on overseas visitors remain in place, however.

A coronavirus countermeasures taskforce is currently assessing possible scenarios and policies that could allow the Olympics to run as scheduled from July 23 to August 8 next year.

The taskforce is formed of officials from the Japanese Government, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Organising Committee, with measures expected to be announced by the end of 2020.
