Virtus has chosen Portugal to host its 2021 World Futsal Championships.

Competition in the men's event is due to take place at the Luso Sports Hall in Mealhada between September 17 and 25.

Portugal will head into their home event as reigning champions after winning the 2017 edition, when Virtus was still known as the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS).

The country also hosted this tournament, in Viseu, while they again tasted success last year by claiming the title at the 2019 INAS Global Games in Brisbane.

They thrashed Saudi Arabia 10-2 to take gold at the Anna Meares Velodrome in the Australian city.

"We are grateful that Portugal has come forward to host this event," said Marc Truffaut, Virtus President.

"We know how difficult it is for all nations right now, but we are determined to deliver our event programme in 2021 and appreciate the efforts of the Local Organising Committee to make this possible.

"Virtus will be working closely with all Organising Committees for 2021 events to ensure a COVID-safe environment for all athletes and teams and is closely following all available guidance and information."
