According to the FIS, the passport will be "a whereabouts and test management database designed to support event participants with the recording of their whereabouts and health data, as well as COVID-19 test results".

The system enables athletes to enter their whereabouts information and to record COVID-19 related data, including helping organisers of events in the sport to "review their status...as defined by the different local rules in place for different events", the FIS added.

Organisers can get access to their event-relevant data on request via a secured web application and the FIS has promised the information will be stored in full compliance of data protection regulations.

The FIS passport was the main topic discussed during a recent webinar on COVID-19 prevention, held by the governing body last week.

It came prior to the season-opening FIS Alpine World Cup in Sölden in Austria, which took place without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Three Russian skiers were unable to compete because of fears two of their coaches had tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 prevention guidelines were later discussed at the FIS' youth and children's seminar.

The event, held online, allowed the FIS to explain the guidelines "to a different group of stakeholders, namely the ones involved with hosting and developing competitions for younger participants".
