Russia has become the latest country to withdraw from the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships, citing concerns over coronavirus and the political situation in Turkey.

Russian national head coach Valentina Rodionenko confirmed the team will not participate.

"We decided to refuse to participate in the European Championship," Rodionenko told the Russian state news agency TASS.

"12 countries have already refused to go to Turkey due to the coronavirus and the difficult political situation.

"It is a pity that this year we will not be able to perform at such a major event.

"Perhaps in December we will organise a special tournament for members of national teams."

The men's European Artistic Gymnastics Championships are set to take place from December 9 to 13, with the women's scheduled to follow from December 17 to 20.

Olympic qualification will not be on offer at the events after the European Gymnastics Executive Committee decided last month it did not want to put pressure on federations to travel to the Championships.

European Gymnastics President Farid Gayibov confirmed the federation has been notified of Russia’s withdrawal.

"We have received an official letter from Russia that the team will not come to the next European Championships in artistic gymnastics," Gayibov told TASS.

"Refusal of participation does not entail any sanctions, since nothing is written about this in our rules.

"Each federation has the right to decide whether to participate in the tournament or not."

Germany announced it had pulled out of this year's European Gymnastics Championships last month.

Britain has also withdrawn from the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Polish gymnasts are also expected to miss the Championships.

The country’s National Federation has been suspended over unpaid debt.
