Sumariwalla was unopposed for the position and will serve a third and final four-year term as AFI President.

The Moscow 1980 Olympian is also a member of the World Athletics Council.

Anju Bobby George, who won women’s long jump bronze at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, was also elected at the meeting.

The 43-year-old, a two-time Olympian, will serve as the AFI’s senior vice-president.

Ravinder Chaudhry and Madhukant Pathak were elected secretary general and treasurer, respectively.

They succeed CK Valson and Madhukant Pathak, who had both completed the maximum of two terms.

World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe appeared via a video link during the meeting and the AFI said Coe praised the organisation’s efforts to help athletes to perform internationally.

"Also, the tough stand that you are taking in doing everything you can to eradicate the scourge of doping," Coe said, according to the AFI.

"These are challenging issues in challenging times.

"I am delighted that you, like many member federations of World Athletics, are not hiding from these challenges.”

Coe highlighted the challenges faced by organisers ahead of the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics next year, and thanked the AFI for their support to key decisions made by the governing body during the coronavirus pandemic.

"There probably will be greater adaptation, they probably will demand more from your teams than we have seen at an Olympic Games before, but please reassure your athletes as they enter preparation stages that there is a determination to stage the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Coe said.

"World Athletics has made some brave decisions in facing many challenges.

"AFI has played an essential role in these times."
