The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) has postponed its Presidential election until after the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games next year.

Members of the GNOC voted in favour of delaying the elections, which grants President Dodou "Capi" Joof an extension to his term.

Joof was elected GNOC President in 2016 and was up for re-election this year.

The GNOC has decided to delay the vote after reviewing a letter from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The IOC said earlier this year that it had adopted a "flexible approach" regarding National Olympic Committees which had been due to hold elections in 2020.

The IOC has allowed NOCs to either postpone their elections or stage them virtually in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The GNOC Presidential election is scheduled to take place after Tokyo 2020, pushed back to next year due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The move was approved following a meeting of the GNOC Board this week.

"After the Board meeting a resolution was sent to all national associations and qualified individual decision makers at GNOC which includes athletes’ representative, IOC member and anybody serving a continental body," said GNOC secretary general Abdoulie MB Jallow.

The Gambia has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games held since 1984, but the country has never won a medal.
