Reigning world badminton champion PV Sindhu has fired a warning to her rivals in the women's competition at Tokyo 2020 next year, claiming she made full use of the coronavirus-enforced stoppage of international sport.

Sindhu will be among the favourites for the gold medal in the women's tournament at the 2020 Olympic Games, pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Indian star, who won silver at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, said she is using the postponement of Tokyo 2020 to her advantage.

"There are some advantages and disadvantages [to the Tokyo Olympics delay], I would say," Sindhu told India Today.

"When there were only a couple of months for the Olympics, I was preparing well, I was in top form, but due to COIVD-19, unfortunately they had to postpone the Olympics.

"At the time, I thought it was a sad thing but I realised life comes first above all this.

"It's just one more year and I will work hard, and in this process, we couldn't play any tournaments.

"In one way, I got to learn new things and improvise by learning different strokes and stuff.

"It's kind of an advantage where I got enough time to train and practice and try out different things and I am definitely going to implement them whenever the tournaments start."

Sindhu, who last month decided to quit the national training camp for players heading to the Tokyo 2020 Games to focus on her recovery and nutrition in London, said she was relishing going into the Olympics as the world champion.

"[Being world champion] is an added advantage as well," the world number six said.

"But I have to make sure... the responsibilities are going to be a lot.

"Compared to 2016, it's going to be very different, people's expectations are a lot more.

"I understand that.

"I go with a mindset that I have to give my best and give my 100 percent.

"That's how I am going to approach it.

"I am confident that I will do well."
